A lot of people want to jump onto the iPad band wagon for adults with classic autism. Technology is great, but there is so much more to “communication” than a device. Attached to this article is a great handout from OCALI: PECS to iPads. There is no such thing as instant communication for individuals with autism. We need to teach the value and function of communication, gain joint attention, and understand the individuals motor planning skills. As lifelong learners, individuals with autism can and will progress, but don’t jump over the communication building blocks because the iPad is fun for the instructor. Communication is so much more than presenting a device to an individual with autism and hoping for a miracle.
